My IT Experience in Korea and Abroad

Chosun University MUTALEMWA LILIAN CHA

Coming to study in Korea

It was in January 2017 when I received my admission letter from Chosun University. I was very excited that I was coming to pursue my Ph.D degree in the Department of Computer Engineering at Chosun University. Although I had already travelled to more than ten countries including Switzerland, United Kingdom, Sweden, Mauritius, Rwanda, South Africa, and France, I knew that my experience in South Korea was going to be incredibly different. I had heard stories about the delicious food in South Korea and the interesting Korean culture and language. Moreover, I had heard that South Korea is a technologically advanced country and home to the tech giants Samsung and LG. Since I was aiming to pursue a Ph.D degree in IT, I decided that South Korea was the place for me. Therefore, I processed my visa at the Korean Embassy in Tanzania and six weeks later, I was at Chosun University, Gwangju. I joined Professor Seokjoo Shin lab and begun my studies. The Gyeongbokgung palace in Seoul is one of the first historical places I got to visit.

My IT experience in Korea and abroad

My IT experience in Korea is notably different from my experience abroad. For instance, while I was involved in many IT projects in my previous roles, I did not get enough resources and skills to attain substantial research output. Under the supervision of Professor Seokjoo Shin at Chosun University, I have been able to acquire enough knowledge, skills, and resources to conduct intensive research work. In my most recent publication, I explored the techniques and mechanisms for achieving ultra-low latency and reliable communications in the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication systems and beyond 5G networks. Specifically, I discussed about artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled techniques for 5G and beyond 5G networks.  In my other recent publications, I evaluated and enhanced the performance of routing protocols in wireless monitoring networks. Moreover, I have been able to take part in local and international conferences. Most of the conferences I have attended have been on the topics of wireless communication systems and AI. My most recent local conference was held in Jeju Island. Jeju Island is a beautiful place which reminds me of Zanzibar Island in my country Tanzania. During my leisure time at Chosun University, I enjoy visiting the Rose Garden inside the university campus. I can happily say that, in Korea, I have been equipped with useful skills and knowledge that I believe will open numerous opportunities in my future endeavours.
